The Latest Rip Off

Bookmark and Share

This one came from Online Jobs again. A woman advertising for writers for a company asked to have a sample written for review. I sent the article, which was three hundred words and received a quick reply. This was the email sent to myself and someone named Amanda.

Amanda, this is a very good test.

Pam, Amanda will be in touch with you asap.

Denise

I had also seen another person post about her scamming articles after this happened to me. Unfortunately, I never heard a word from anyone. I did wait for a while, but now I am posting my article right here. I will not lose my articles to thieves and you should not either.

No Sleep In Las Vegas

Las Vegas the city of many lights has often been considered a fast-paced city without rest. In most cases, this is correct. Because of all the shows and gambling and other attractions in the area, one usually experiences sleepless nights. The city is a popular attraction for young and old wanting to get married in one of the many wedding chapels that line the streets. People come to take in the shows that are presented every night in one of the many hotel casinos. Sleep is not a word you here very much about when visiting this wonderful city.

The sky show down in the old city is spectacular and happens every night at dark. They have different scenes and provide about five to ten minutes of entertainment. This light show requires you to look into the sky where they have a dome covering, which shows the light show. This is something that everyone needs to see. Las Vegas has become populated with many casinos and even today, they tear down the old and build the new and larger casinos. The Bellagio Hotel and Casino has a water show daily and nightly that is done in front of the hotel in the connecting pond.

With colorful light shows and the casinos themselves having so many lights, it is no wonder that nobody has much sleep when visiting this enormous city. People come from everywhere to gamble, dine, shop and check out the fabulous night shows. Although sleepless nights happen more than you can imagine, the hotels still have affordable pricing and in some cases, you can use your keycards to earn discounts on your hotel rooms. You still need a place to take a shower and freshen up before the next round of fun in one of the hundreds of casinos.

You can do some sightseeing as well in Las Vegas. The Hoover Dam is a short distance up the mountain from the city. It is a spectacular view of the Hoover dam and the scenery surrounding the area. Many other attractions await you outside the city of Las Vegas including the Turbo Drop, Pioneer Saloon, Frog Hopper, Chloride Mining Town and the Adventure Canyon ride.

With all these wonderful things to do in and out of the city, one will not have much time for sleep in Las Vegas. One thing more to see in the city is the Botanical Park. It is just extraordinary and exciting. Have a great time in Las Vegas and live it up by having full days and nights.

    • Very good website!! There is currently a woman on the online jobs forum who is asking people to send her three positive stories on Africa. So I asked her if I would be paid for them and how much. She said that she has to pick and choose the best article and then that person would be paid. I immediately told her that she was exploiting writers and she very perturbed by what I had to say. I told her that she was wasting my time and other writer's time. She was very insulting and rude, she even tried to discredit me but I stood my ground and I hope that there are other freelance journalists can follow our leads.

    • Great site! You come across all sorts of clients on the Net.Keep up the good work.

    • Keep in mind, everyone, that when you do a test article (for free or otherwise), you might not get the job, even if you did have an excellent article. Sometimes it is just a matter of another qualified writer sending their test in more quickly.

That doesn't mean that the job was a scam...it means that you didn't get the job. Personally, I won't ever do test articles for free. I'm willing to send samples for free or do a single article "test" for the real price. If you have to write for free to get jobs, maybe you should consider a different career path.

I do think this is a very good idea for a site, because there are lots of scammers out there, but be aware that slander/libel laws apply to blogs just as they apply to print and spoken words, so make sure something is truly a scam before you post about it.

    • This is a great site. It has been necessary for a very long time. The parent site for Online Jobs had a discussion forum with a deadbeat thread. However, when the board was moved to a new server the thread was lost. You run into so many people who are doing this kind of thing and it really is hard for a writer in this day and age. With the print based media lowering their rates and the online companies paying next to nothing, it is hard for any writer to make it in the world. If I can be of any help please let me know. I am the madhatter on the freelance writing discussion forum so feel free to contact me any time.

    • Hi there! Great site. There is another one of these out there - perhaps we could blogroll each other? This site is www.writerstowriterswarnings.com and the email address is writerstowriterswarnings@gmail.com. If you email me a story or a person's name who has scammed you, I'll write an entry about it on that blog. I will put this one on the blog so it is linked, and I hope you will do them same for me! That way we can help each other out! Thanks!

    • Amanda and Denise run "wondemand" writing, or something like that. they are very very unorganized. it is possible to get work from them, and it is possible to get payment, but you often have to hound them for both. they are not professional and they are not organized, but at times they can and do provide work if you are willing to hound them!

By Blogger Writers Warnings, At August 6, 2007 at 3:15 PM

    • I wrote samples for Wondemand a few months back. My samples were approved and I waited and waited to be given work. I communicated with Denise and Amanda for four months and only got the run-around. They were always too "busy". I finally gave up and decided that other writing opportunities deserved my attention. I now make much much more per article than the measly $6.50 they offered at the time.

I don't know if they are a scam or not. All I know is that I did not get very far with them, even with my peristent follow-up. Anybody that needs to be hounded this much for work or payment isn't worth any decent writer's time.

All of my current clients have been very professional and timely with their payments. Don't be afraid to sever ties with the unorganized. There are plenty of opportunities out there to build long-term business relationships with people who provide steady, good-paying work.

    • I agree that sometimes there are times when people take forever, but an email to at least let someone know you haven't forgot them helps. I am just amazed at the people who ask for writers and then take the articles without paying. I have more stories, just have to write them.

By Blogger Blondie Writes - Pamela, At August 6, 2007 at 6:52 PM

    • I work for Amanda et. al. Yes, they are disorganized, but they do pay and they have consistent work if you can write well. I have landed some good work for them, but keep in mind that they have hundreds of submissions when they post ads.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At August 6, 2007 at 10:13 PM

    • This sounds like a similar experience. I even wrote them back asking for payment, they wrote back (not sure if it is the same person) stating they'd pay me. I explained if I wan't paid within a week I'd sell it. They said I couldn't or they could sue. I think I'll do what you did. Thanks for the idea.

By Blogger Homemom3, At August 20, 2007 at 5:02 AM

    • I wrote for Wondemand two years ago and it was the worst writing experience of my life. The people running this company delayed payment, tried to get me to accept lower payment than we had agreed on, and talked trash about other writers working for them. My advice to writers: RUN! I wish I could kindly say that this company is unprofessional. The truth, I suspect, is that they use "busyness" as an excuse to treat writers poorly.

    • I wrote for Amanda/Wondemand for a while and I must say it's not exactly pleasant. They are great people but seem like they don't know what day of the week it is. I've done various projects for them and I'm still waiting for payment from a project that I did in June last year.

    • Here's another person I want to warn others about. She's a PR trickster who used to run a PR agency. I got scammed out of $800 for work unpaid. I did PR work for her for an author (I used to work in publishing). Anyway, her name is Leann Garms and she's out of TX. She's the WORST and most unethical person I've worked for during my career (and I've worked in some top positions for non-profit orgs. etc). I was advised not to sue since it wasn't worth it (based on that it wasn't for thousands of dollars). This happened to me about 4-5 yrs ago but I'm sure she's still out there wreaking unethical havoc. Beware of her!

PS--also, please be wary of e-book publishers--they are very good at posing as scam artists and I highly advise NEVER to put any money into selling your book. If your book should sell itself and you should never have to pay someone to read (reading fees are bogus) or print your book! Research more reputable presses/publishers! Good luck.

    • I've just began writing for Amanda at Wondemand and so far, I agree its very confusing working for her. She sends me projects without reviewing it and doesn't forward all pertinent information. I've only worked for her 1 week now and just sent an invoice yesterday. However, if she does not pay for web content that I just completed, I will contact that website owner and explain to him that he cannot publish his website with my content because it isnt paid for. Amanda gets her work from Elance and if she doesn't pay, I'll be happy to let everyone know what her online elance ID is.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At May 13, 2008 at 12:18 PM

    • They have not gotten any better. You still have to beg Amanda for payment, and you likely will not get it anyway. I encourage people to not work for her until she is able to pay for the work you do. I believe she has good intentions, but that does not change the fact she fails to pay a lot of what is owed.
