Sending Samples Of Your Work

Bookmark and Share

Here are a few rules to remember when sending your samples to potential clients.

Just as a reminder, these are your articles and before you send anything to a potential client, you need to protect what you have written by following these simple steps.

1. Make a dated copy prior to sending your story to anyone
2. Start the copyright process
3. Add the copyright symbol and year when sending a copy to anyone
4. Send a dated cover page stating that you are the author of the copy, (keep a copy of this as well)

I found this information in a potential writing gig from the person looking for an article writer. I felt compelled to share this information.

    • Great tips...but I have a few questions. How do you make a dated copy of your sample? Are you creating new samples for each client or are you using the same ones? If you use the same samples consistently, then you won't have as big of a problem with theft.

    • I sometimes submit sample articles that are relavent to the job I am applying for, therefore, using word you can make your samples copyrighted by doing a few things. I wil post a picture when I get it done.

    • To whom are you sending these samples?

I'd hate to say it, but to many magazine owners, a copyright mark is the sign of an amateur. If it is a would be stealer of content, it won't matter to them one whit if it is marked with copyright marks.

You don't have to copyright your work. Your work is under copyright protection the moment you write it.

I'd like to save you trouble and effort, and to protect your manuscript from the rejection pile.
